I’ve heard that accidental meatotomy is a possibility with a Prince Albert piercing if you wear jewelry that is the wrong size and/or if you wear really heavy jewelry. I was considering the piercing, but that scared me. I know some people go really crazy with Prince Albert piercings and that wasn’t my intention. (I would wear like 8g or 6g and leave it at that: nothing weird hanging from it, no tire sized rings) Is meatotomy still a realistic risk if I wear average sized jewelry and am gentle?

For the uninitiated a meatotomy is a split of the underside of the head of the penis. Unintentional meatotmy is a potential risk of a Prince Albert piercing, but not a likely or common one. We’re talking like shark attack or lightning strike low chance here, don’t worry about it.

It would take either a severely shallow piercing, or a very serious tearing accident. It’s not something that would happen to the average PA.

Hey guys, I wanted to get your opinion on a recent reaction I had with my lobes. They’ve been healed at 00 for three years now and for months I have been wearing double flared rose quartz stone plugs in them. Two days ago I put in turquoise plugs, same style, with no pain whatsoever. Today though when I woke up my right lobe was very sore, red, and goopey. I take them out every night in the shower to clean my ears with some warm water. Any idea what could have caused the irritation?

Have you noticed any color difference in the plugs at all? Many of the “turquoise” plugs sold by cheaper manufacturers are actually dyed Howlite stone. Howlite has a very similar veining and can hold a surface dye, so it is commonly colored blue and sold as an artificial turquoise to lower costs.

If this is the case with your jewelry you may be having a mild allergic reaction to either the Howlite material, or the dye used to make it blue. If the jewelry is from a reputable manufacturer it could be other issues like surface polish, it’s hard to say without knowing where it came from though.

For the short term I would simply change back to a pair of plugs you know to be compatible and comfortable in your ears. In the future there is nothing wrong with asking about where your jewelry comes from before purchasing it. Any reputable piercer or jeweler would be happy to discuss where your piece comes from and how it was made. I love jewelry and I’m always happy to talk about it with an interested client.
